Travel Basics
What Should I Pack?

We highly recommend you invest into a traditional “backpackers backpack” which is compact enough to carry onto your flight. We do not recommend checking in your bag with the airline you will be flying with in case your bag is accidentally lost. Keep in mind that Globalized Citizen Trips are primarily adventures based tours which may require you to walk with your baggage. We recommend staying within a 30-40 liter backpack for all of your belongings.

We have included a comprehensive packing checklist which can be found on our website here. Also, make sure you stay updated on your Facebook Group as we may release additional tips and tricks on packing for your specific trip. We highly recommend that you pack as light as possible! You’ll be able to purchase common bathroom commodities from the local minimarts and convenient stores while on your adventure. Make sure you bring clothing which you can re-wear and is breathable in a humid environment!

What local currency is my trip on?

The price of all Globalized Citizen Trips are quoted in United States Dollars (USD).  For a current conversion rate of the local country you’ll be visiting, please visit here.

I only speak English, will the language barrier be an issue?

All of our Tour Directors are experienced at traveling through the countries we operate in. Of course, you will have an opportunity to dive right into the culture and interact with the locals. “Simple English” will get you very far while in most places of the world. Just remember, English is usually not local’s first language so it is important that you remain patient and polite! English is gaining in popularity throughout the majority of the destinations as most locals have learned it through school or working within the tourism industry. However, if you need any help with communication you can ask you trip guide!

What should I do about money when I travel?

The first thing you need to do is call your bank(s) & credit card(s) you’ll be using while you are abroad and notify them of the countries you will be traveling to. Remember to include any transfer countries as well. For example, if you have a connecting flight in Dubai, you will want to inform your bank and your credit card providers.

Notifying your financial providers will help prevent them from blocking your funds from making purchases abroad. When you are abroad, you can withdraw money from ATM’s just like you do in the United States.

Remember, you will want to keep this money safely stashed away deep within your backpack to prevent theft. We recommend bringing several credit cards and debit cards with you in the event you lose a card or an ATM “eats” one of your cards.

Please be advised that most credit card companies charge a “cash advance” fee which automatically charges interest on your account when pulling cash from ATMs using a credit card. We advise you use a debit card for cash withdrawals. You can also bring over United States Dollars and complete a currency exchange when you arrive at your final destination. Can I bring travelers checks?

We do not recommend bringing travelers checks! It is extremely difficult to find places to cash these checks. With the limited time you are visiting these destinations, you will want to spend every moment enjoying your vacation. Take our recommendation: forget travelers checks ever existed! If you do bring them, you will be responsible for identifying the locations and transportation to cash your checks. We recommend bringing cash and multiple debit cards so you can take advantage of conveniently located ATMs & Currency Exchange Offices.

How much should I budget?

We recommend budgeting about $50-$80 a day for entertainment, food, and spending money while in at your destination. You can budget more or less, but this is a pleasant amount to bring with you. Gratuity is optional and is already included in the tour package. We recommend the following budget.

  • Lunch:$5 – $10/day
  • Dinner: $5 – $10/day
  • Entertainment: $30 – $50/day


Is there a pre-tour checklist to help me plan?

Absolutely! After you are enrolled in one of our Global Tours, we will personally send you a pre-tour checklist to help you plan for your vacation. We will also provide you your group leader’s contact information so you can receive answers to any tour specific questions you may have.

What if I have special dietary needs?

We can usually find food which will work for your dietary needs and your group tour guide can help you communicate any dietary restrictions with the locals. We have successfully traveled with Vegans, Vegetarians, those with seafood, milk, and peanut allergies. Whatever your dietary restrictions may be, be sure to communicate this information with your tour leader upon trip sign-up.

Do I need a vaccine for my tour?

We do not require any specific vaccinations to join us on tour. However, you will want to make sure you are all up-to-date on all of your vaccinations needed within the United States. In addition, you will want to consult with your personal primary care physician to receive any vaccinations which may be recommended for the destinations you will be visiting.

For example, participants visiting Thailand may be advised to receive oral vaccinations for Malaria and Typhoid. It is the participant’s responsibility to consult with their personal health care physician and receive all vaccinations prior to departure.

Do I need a visa for my trip?
  • It is your responsibility to review entry requirements for the countries you will visiting while on tour and obtain all necessary travel documents, including a passport and any applicable visas.
  • For Thailand, Visas can be obtained upon arrival at major international airports with a USA passport.
  • Non-U.S. citizens will need to contact the embassy and/or consulate of their destination’s requirements to ensure they meet specified entry requirements.
Who is responsible for passports and visas?

Globalized Citizen is not able to get passports and visas on your behalf. Therefore, it is your responsibility to secure all the necessary travel documents before departure.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

When signing up, be sure to include your first, middle, last name, and date of birth as shown (or will be shown) on your passport.

If you have not yet applied for a passport you will want to do so immediately. Most major universities within the United States offer passport processing services. You can also purchase a passport through the government’s application website.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your scheduled return to the United States.

Non-U.S. citizens especially will need to contact the embassy and/or consulate of their destination countries to ensure they meet specific entry requirements.

Are there any age requirements to sign up for a Globalized Citizen trip?

Yes, you have to be between the ages of 18-34 to participate on a Globalized Citizen Guided Group Trip. However, if you are above the age of 34 years old you can still reach out to us and plan a private trip! We believe the 18-34 age group is the perfect time to travel as it provides an opportunity to live while you’re young and diversify your global perspectives. While abroad, we hope to influence and inspire our participants to choose to take adventures around the world more often so they can better understand the diverse world we live in.

What if I’m 17 when I book and I’ll be 18 when I travel?

That’s totally cool with us! Your parent or guardian will need to review and sign our booking conditions and the liability release on your behalf.

What if I’m 34 when I book and I’ll be 35 when I travel?

You must be 34 or younger during the time of the trip. However, you may reach out to us as we offer private guided trip/trip planning services.

Do I have to be a college student?

Nope! You’re already a student of living life, right? You just need to be between the ages of 18-34 during the tour. Our trips are designed to bring together a diverse community of peers from all over the country. Whether you’re a student, young professional, full-time traveler, or a technomad, you deserve a full-blown adventure to break away from the daily stresses of life!

Safety is the highest priority when traveling with Globalized Citizen. Our Travel Policies: Globalized Citizen’s travel policies are in accordance with the recommendations of the U.S. Department of State, Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Travel Protection Plan: You can benefit from an insurance policy which is specifically designed to meet the needs of Globalized Citizen’s Travelers. We highly recommend all of our travelers purchase the travel protection offered on our website in order to protect their investment prior to departure and to cover costs incase the unexpected happens during the duration of the trip.

Personal Trip Consultants: Our team consists of travel experts who have traveled all around the world and are true experts at backpacking adventures. They will be there to help answer any specific questions you may have and give advice on the “hidden gems” of each destination you’ll be visiting. If you have any questions for us, let us know!

Full-Time Tour Director: Throughout the entirety of your trip, you will have a tour director to help guide you while on tour and be your resource for getting the best experience possible while visiting your destination.

What if I get sick on the tour?

We offer a comprehensive Travel Protection Plan that protects up to $50,000 for medical and accidental coverage. We highly recommend that you purchase a travel protection plan so you are protected before and during your travel. Our travel protection plan has been designed specifically for the Globalized Citizen Traveler in mind. Make sure you visit the benefits guide to see all of the protections included in the insurance plan.

What if, for unexpected reasons, I need to leave tour?

If you are on tour and leave early due to a sickness or personal reasons not covered by applicable Travel Protection, you are responsible for any additional costs incurred by interrupting the tour, and will not be refunded for portions missed. Standard cancellation policy would be applied.

Will my phone work overseas?

To get the most out of your Globalized Citizen experience, we highly recommend for you to disconnect. If you would like to stay connected at all times, you can contact your telecommunications service provider for an international data plan. Otherwise, you can use WIFI which will be accessible at most restaurants, bars, and our hotel accommodations.

If you do not want to spend the money on an international data plan, you can use mobile applications such as WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Google Hangouts, and Skype to communicate with your friends and family back at home when you have WIFI!

What type of transportation is included on tour?

We make sure you get to all of your destinations throughout your entire itinerary with ease. We make traveling easy by handling the transportation logistics behind your travels. We use a combination of private bus charters, public ferries, private fast boats and local transportation suppliers such as Tuk Tuks to get around! We take care of all of the transportation to get you from destination to destination so you can spend less time thinking about transportation and more time enjoying your adventure!

Our goal is to provide the most efficient transportation which is both comfortable and affordable whether it be on the ground, air, or water. The main way you will be making your way is by your own two feet so make sure you bring a great pair of walking shoes!

What's the pace like on my trip and how much free time will I have?

We know you want to see the world in your own way and we kept that in mind when designing our itineraries. That’s why our itineraries are specifically designed to include as much free time as possible. Your tour director will be happy to educate you on all of the awesome things to do and the “hidden gems” of each destination so you can take full advantage of your free time.

In general, you will have your evening free to do whatever you please after our daily activities. There will be days where you could just enjoy the weather on the beach or plan to go visit something you haven’t seen before. However, when it comes to traveling from one destination to the other, you will be required to participate on transfers. If you need help with individual activities and excursions, be sure to contact your tour director for help!

What will my group be like?
  • It’ll be kick-ass! That’s the whole point, right? Our trips are catered for those 18-34 years old who are excited to see the true beauty found within our world. Group sizes can range depending on the trip and the time the trip takes place. You will be traveling with up to 30 other travelers at a time, so you’ll have a lot of new friends to make!
  • We have participants from all over the United States. Whether that be sunny Miami or Los Angeles, we recruit the best people to travel the world with.
  • Thinking of traveling alone?  More than half of our travelers are solo adventures!
What makes group travel awesome?

We believe everyone should have an opportunity to travel in their life and the most impactful time to travel is between the ages of 18-34. The first decade of adulthood can be profoundly impacted, in a positive way, which can forever reshape the developed of a young adult. Whether the international experience is through leisure, academia, or work-study, the experience in itself is valuable for personal development.

What is included in your trips?

So much! We include your accommodations, transportation to each destination in your tour, a full-time local guide, countless activities & a travel support team. Please view your trip’s specific itinerary for a detailed list of what is included in your tour price.


Can I extend my trip?

Extending your trip after your tour ends is very easy! We can help you identify and purchase the cheapest flights home to keep your travels affordable. Once your Globalized Citizen Trip is over, you would be responsible for coordinating your accommodations and transportation for the remainder of your international travels. You will also want to contact your travel insurance provider to inform them of the additional travels you will be conducting.


Do you offer payment plans?

We sure do! It’s one of the many reasons why we make international travel so affordable.

Automatic Payment Plan:

  • Place your deposit of $200
  • Select monthly or bi-weekly payments.
  • Choose your preferred payment method (credit card or debit card).
  • Your final payment will occur at least 30 days before the departure date of your trip.
  • We also give you the flexibility to design your own payment plan. You will need to make a contribution every month which will be determined by your initial downpayment to reserve your spot for the tour.

Pay in Full: You also have the option to pay for your entire trip in full if you prefer.


Tell me more about the Automatic Payment Plan.

We are happy to announce that we offer an interest-free payment plan to make our Global Tours as affordable as possible for our travelers! We recommend travelers choose an automatic payment plan to keep payments low and on time.

You will be able to choose monthly or bi-weekly payment plans. The total package cost is divided across all of the installments. We offer our payment installments as far in advance as 12 months prior to departure. The final payment will need to be processed a minimum of 30 days prior to departure.

How Much Will My Payments Cost? – That is up to you!

We require a minimum down payment of $200 and then the rest of the package is divided among the # of installments.

For example, an automatic payment plan for a total tour package of $2,000 with a package down payment of $200 would incur the monthly payment of $150 on a 12-month installment plan.



What if I miss a payment?

We completely understand that some months may be difficult for you to make a payment. You are allowed to skip two payments before being dropped from the tour. However, you cannot miss the first or last scheduled payment. If you miss a payment, you will be notified via email and your new payment plan terms will be adjusted accordingly.

Globalized Citizen reserves the right to remove travelers from the payment plan from declines or returns of two consecutive payments If payments are not maintained, Globalized Citizen has the right to withdraw travelers from participating. Our Standard Cancellation Policy would apply.

What payment types do you accept?

We accept all major credit and debit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and all Direct Debit Cards. In order to process a payment, we will need the following information:

  • Name as displayed on card
  • Card number
  • Card expiration date
  • Card security code (found on back of card)
  • Card billing zip code

Is pricing per person?

Yes, all pricing as shown within our website is on a per person basis. If you’d like to bring friends we would love to have them with us! We have an awesome referral and group discount program to help you make your trip even more affordable! You can check out the details here.

What if I need to cancel my trip?

You will have 48 hours after booking a trip to cancel for a refund. After the 48 hours have passed, the standard cancellation policy would be applied and you will be refunded for monies paid minus the cancellation fees.

Cancellation fees are as followed:

Days prior to cancellation fee:

  • 60 days or less      All Monies Paid
  • 179 – 61 days       $1,500
  • 299 – 180 days     $1,000
  • 364 – 300 days     $500
  • 365+ days            $200

Can I cut the trip short if it doesn’t work with my schedule?

You must be able to travel on the entirety of the itinerary tour so be sure to select the trip which best fits your needs. If you have to leave the trip early, you will be required to coordinate the transportation and refunds will not be granted. The standard cancellation policy would be applied.

Are there fees for changing my trip?

If you are at least 180 days away from the start of the trip you can change to any other tour if availability permits. If there is a difference in price you will be required to pay the difference. We do not refund the difference if the new selected trip is less than the original trip which you enrolled in.

After the 180 day mark, there is a $100 trip change fee if you decide you would like to be enrolled in a different trip instead of the original itinerary selected. You can read more about changing your trip in the booking conditions section of our website.

What if I want to rebook to a different tour or departure date?
We are very flexible and can help you enroll into a new trip if there are still spots available on the new trip you would like to enroll in. Please notify your Global Travel Representative of any trip changes you would like to make at least 180 days prior to departure. Once availability has been confirmed, we will update your account to reflect the new trip you have enrolled in.
